Sprint partner Clearwire adding more standard 4G technology
Clearwire Corp., the train that wholesales the wireless broadband that Sprint Nextel sells retail, said Wednesday it would start using the same technology as its competitors.

That would bury the hatchet e construct Clearwire compatible with the high-speed wireless devices used by most of the crucial cellphone carriers in the country. By adding long term evolution, or LTE, to its network, the decisive will join Verizon Wireless and other leading carriers in using that technology for 4G coverage.

The ad came, coincidentally, just hours after Standard & Poor’s Corp. lowered its over of Clearwire’s prospects. Despite the change by S&P, the money-losing company’s genealogy rose 23 cents a share to $2.47 on Wednesday, an increase of more than 10 percent.

After the customer base closed, Clearwire announced it had added 1.64 million subscribers in the year’s more recent quarter but still lost more than $100 million.

The company’s outlook was stung by a parcel out completed last week between Sprint and LightSquared. That agreement could potentially pay Sprint $9 billion to list LightSquared antennas in its continuing network upgrade, and give Sprint a chance to access the same LTE 4G servicing.

So far, Sprint has been using Clearwire’s 4G network and its WiMax technology to power responsive broadband for its customers. But the expansion of the Clearwire-Sprint 4G network has slowed considerably this year because of dwindling means just as leading competitors have begun to roll out their high-speed wireless overhaul.

Sprint owns 54 percent of Clearwire. The remaining owners are mostly wire companies.

The announcement Wednesday that Clearwire would begin adding LTE to its network was greeted by some analysts as a needed survival move.

“They mastery do it quickly,” said Timm Bechter, an investment analyst for Waddell & Reed in Overland Estate.

Most of the U.S. wireless industry is using LTE as its 4G, or fourth generation, standard for carrying details. By switching to LTE, Bechter said, Clearwire’s network will quickly become more compatible with more phones and laptop wireless cards. He said that, in in rotation, will make it easier for Clearwire to get investors willing to back its network expansion.

Clearwire’s move, said another analyst, will be far cheaper than construction an LTE network from scratch because the company either owns or leases many cell towers. Righteous as importantly, it has installed the wires that connect those towers to land-based networks.

“The electronics (needed to add LTE) are a big expense,” said Rick Franklin of Edward Jones & Co., “but it’s not a doubling of the investment.”

Existing customers using Sprint 4G devices rely on WiMax, and Clearwire said it will carry on with to support service to phones such as the Evo and the Epic, and mobile WiFi devices based on that technology.

Sprint declined exposition on Clearwire’s announcement, saying only in an email that “we are a strong partner with Clearwire and we will carry on with to sell 4G products and services in our markets.”

On Wednesday, S&P announced it was shifting its rating view of Clearwire from “developing” to “negative.” It left its corporate depend on rating for Clearwire at CCC+. A company spokesman declined comment on the revision.

The rating mechanism noted that Sprint had not pumped additional money into Clearwire since 2009. S&P said in a set that the Overland Park-based carrier’s deal with LightSquared “would over time belittle reliance on Clearwire’s spectrum and wholesale network.”

Unlike Clearwire’s WiMax technology, LightSquared will use LTE. The stock with LightSquared was a signal that Sprint’s broadband future might shift toward LTE. With both Clearwire and LightSquared planning LTE networks, Sprint could more shortly expand its 4G coverage.

S&P also said it was unlikely to upgrade its credit rating on Clearwire to B- over the next year “set the company’s need for additional capital by mid-2012.” It also said it could put down its Clearwire rating in the next few quarters if its cash shortage problems aren’t solved.

In some ways, the ratings procession could be a vote of confidence in the Sprint-LightSquared deal. For that agreement to work, LightSquared will still extremity to raise more money and overcome federal regulators’ concerns that its broadcast signals might jam GPS navigation units.
